Is Vicoden Abuse To Blame For Batman Shootings

Just weeks ago James Holmes was a name that was not recognizable by nearly anyone in the country. Now the man and his horrific crime of killing 12 people and injuring 58 others when he opened fire during a premier of the Batman movie The Dark Night is known all over the world. Holmes has been described as many things since the time of his crime from a psychopath to just plain weird. But the one piece of information that has just come out is that the man was also a drug addict.
According to reports the drug Vicoden was taken by Holmes just before he gunned down several people in a movie theatre while dressed as the Joker. Coincidentally this was also the drug used by Heath Ledger who played the part of the Joker in the last movie. It was also the drug that was found in the late actor’s body after his death.
Holmes apparently has been taking this drug in large amounts for some time; and it is a substance that causes paranoia, anxiety, depression and erratic behavior in users.
Vicoden is also one of the primary types of prescription painkillers abused in the country along with substances like Oxycodone, and Oxycontin. The prescription is one of many names used for Hydrocodone which is the number one most abused painkiller on the market.
Obviously not all of the 8 million people that misuse and abuse prescriptions are mass murders but is the drug to blame for the downfall of this man and the crimes he committed?
According to government statistics a very high percentage of all crimes (both violent and nonviolent) are committed either in effort to obtain drugs or because one is under the influence.
Clearly in this disastrous incident Homes was high on Vicoden at the time of his crimes. While it is uncertain if the drug made him to this or not the thing that is clear is that out of this tragedy comes a new found understand of the threat of prescription drug abuse.
